Single Review: Feel The Warmth of The Head And The Heart's “Blue Embers”

Alternative indie-folk 6-piece band The Head And The Heart released their new single "Blue Embers" on April 11. The track is a heartfelt declaration of the importance of community and is the fourth single from their upcoming album, Aperture, out May 9. The track explores feelings of isolation and hardship with an optimistic outlook. The resonant guitar and acoustic production foster a sense of intimacy, as if the band is singing directly to the listener.

Lyrics like "So what's it gonna take, honey / For you to believe there might be a better life waitin'? / Don't make it worse, let it go past" inspire listeners to live in the present and take control of their future. Oftentimes, ruminating on painful memories and past decisions becomes a form of self-sabotage. This song strives to shake one out of that endless cycle and create the life they want.

Aperture marks the band's triumphant return to a DIY approach, as it's their first self-produced record since their 2011 debut. That warm production and lyricism make the song feel like a hug from a friend. Their signature mesmerizing harmonies emphasize each line, conveying how they approached these topics with a level of genuine tenderness and care.

"Blue Embers was written in that never-ending, always-ending space. If it weren’t for music, that space would be harder and harder to see through. And if you’re in there right now, know that you’re not alone, that it does open up, and that there’s beauty on the other side you can’t even imagine. Just hold on," shared member Matt Gervais in a press release.

Lyrics like "I know that it's hard on you, but it's hard on me too / Honey, we're lost together" unite listeners and remind them they're not alone. The sense of hope one can feel from a support system acknowledges the power of shared understanding and empathy. The group is about to embark on an extensive North American tour starting May 30. They'll be stopping at Boston's MGM Music Hall on June 5. Buy tickets here.
